Off the Beat

English runs on a beat. Some words land on it and stay loud; the rest fall between and get crushed. Play the sentence and tap the words you actually heard as full, loud words.

Most of these follow the rule and you could guess them from grammar. The last few do not — the speaker moves the beat onto a word the rule says is crushed, because they are contrasting something. Those you can only get by listening, and they are the reason the rule is a habit rather than a law.
