The biggest task in Listening is one nobody has practised
Listen and Choose a Response is up to 19 of the 47 items in TOEFL 2026 Listening — and it did not exist before 2026, so there is no practice tradition behind it.
What it is
Listen and Choose a Response is new in 2026. It is also the largest single task in the Listening section: 15 to 19 items out of 47, roughly a third of everything you will answer. Put those two facts together — the task with the most items is the one with no accumulated technique behind it, and very little written about it, because until this year it was not on the test.
One line of speech comes in. You choose the best reply from four options. That is the whole task: no passage, no lecture, no notes. Someone says something, and you pick what a competent English speaker would say back.
ETS puts its CEFR range at A1–B2 — the lowest of any Listening task, which is why it is tempting to write off as the easy part. That is a mistake for the same reason the Reading word-completion task is: a task can be individually easy and still decide your section, because there are so many of them.
Why it is harder than it reads
The audio is short, so there is nothing to re-derive. You hear it once, and either you caught the function of what was said or you did not. And function is the thing being tested, not vocabulary.
Two deliberate traps
The option that repeats a word from the prompt is usually wrong — recognising a word you heard feels like comprehension, and it is the cheapest available distractor. And hold the question word together with the noun after it: “What time does the library close” and “Why does the library close early” share vocabulary and have completely different correct replies. Under pressure people retain the topic and lose the question word.
Why practice is the entire problem here
This task cannot be studied. There is no rule set, no template, no essay structure. It is a reflex — hear a line, register what it was doing, pick the reply — and reflexes come from repetition and nothing else.
Which is awkward, because there is very little material. The task is a year old, and the books that exist are reconstructions. The format is also unusually badly suited to a page: a printed transcript hands you the line to re-read, which removes the one condition the task actually tests.
You need many short items, played once, with the answer explained straight afterwards so the pattern lands while the line is still in your ear.
