The ten kinds of document Reading actually puts in front of you

What actually appears

Across the published 2026 material, Read in Daily Life draws on the same small set of everyday document types. Not one of them is an essay.

• A notice
• An email
• A form
• A receipt
• An advertisement
• A news article
• A book blurb
• An online discussion
• A social media post
• A general article

If your preparation has been academic reading, none of this is what you have been training. That is not a small mismatch: this task is up to fifteen of Reading’s fifty items.

Each type hides the answer somewhere different

Academic prose is linear and argued — you read from the top and the meaning accumulates. Everyday documents are not. The information you need sits in a structural position that varies by type, and reading them front-to-back is usually the slow way in.

• Notices and advertisements: the qualifying condition is in the smallest text, and it is the whole question.
• Forms and receipts: the answer is a relationship between two fields, not a sentence anywhere.
• Emails: the request is in the politest sentence, not the clearest one.
• Online discussions and social posts: what is being asked depends on who is replying to whom, so the thread structure carries the meaning.

The one thing that does not transfer

You can read this list, agree with all of it, and still lose the marks — because the skill is not knowing that a receipt hides its answer between two fields. It is doing that recognition in a few seconds, on a document you have never seen, while a clock runs.

That only comes from meeting a lot of these documents, in volume, with the misread named immediately afterwards. Reading about the categories takes three minutes; building the reflex takes repetitions.
