Every 2026 task has a CEFR target. Find the one aimed at you
ETS publishes a CEFR range for every 2026 task. It tells you which parts of the test are built for your level now, and which aim above it.
What ETS publishes
Each 2026 task carries a CEFR band range — the level of English it is written to test. This is unusually useful information and almost nobody uses it.

How to read it without misreading it
A range is not a difficulty rating. It is the span of ability the task can distinguish between. “A1–C2” means the task contains items from the bottom of the scale to the top, and will place you somewhere along it. “A1–B2” means the task stops discriminating above B2 — a C1 candidate and a B2 candidate will both do well and the task cannot separate them.
The practical consequence
Four tasks start at B1: Complete the Words, Read an Academic Passage, and both written tasks. If your English is around A2, those four have no easy end for you to score on — the marks available to you are concentrated in the tasks that begin at A1. That is where your time goes first, and it is the opposite of what most people do, which is to grind the hardest thing.
In the other direction: if you are comfortably C1, Listen and Choose a Response is not where your remaining marks are. It tops out below you. The tasks that can still separate you from the person next to you are the ones running to C2 — the academic talk, the academic passage, and both written tasks.
The catch, and it is a real one
This only helps if you know your actual CEFR level, and most people do not. Self-assessment is unreliable in a specific direction: reading feels easier than it is, because you set your own pace, and speaking feels harder than it is, because you can hear yourself.
You also do not have one level. It is normal to read at B2 and speak at A2, and the four section bands the 2026 test reports exist precisely because a single number hides that. A table of CEFR targets is only actionable next to an honest read of where you currently sit, per skill.
