Ten of the twelve Writing items are not essays
TOEFL 2026 Writing is 12 items in 23 minutes. Ten are single sentences, two are extended writing, and neither of those two is the essay you prepared for.
The section, exactly
Writing is the section ETS specifies most precisely — the only one published with no ranges at all. Not “5–15 items”. Exactly:

If you prepared for the old TOEFL, your Writing practice was two long essays — an integrated task summarising a lecture against a reading, and an independent opinion essay. Neither exists. The independent essay in particular is gone, and a great deal of published advice is still built on it.
23 minutes is tighter than the item count suggests
The email and the discussion post are where the marks concentrate and where the thinking happens; between them they take most of the section. That leaves roughly six minutes for ten sentence items — about thirty-five seconds each. Thirty-five seconds is not enough time to reason about grammar. It is enough time to recognise a structure or not.
What “Write for an Academic Discussion” actually asks
This is the task that most resembles real academic life, and the one people most reliably misjudge. You are shown a discussion board: a professor poses a question, and two students have already replied. You write your contribution. The CEFR band runs B1–C2, and it is rated rather than machine-scored.
The failure mode is treating it as a miniature essay. People write a thesis, two supporting paragraphs and a conclusion, at length, and score below what their English deserves — because a contribution that ignores the other two students reads as off-task no matter how clean the prose is. That is a discourse skill, not a grammar one, and it does not improve by writing more essays.
The awkward bit about practising this alone
Both extended tasks are rated, not machine-marked — which means practising them alone has a hole in the middle. You can write an academic discussion post every day for a month and have no idea whether you are doing the thing the task rewards, because the failure is invisible from the inside. Your English looks fine to you. It is the shape of the contribution that is wrong, and you cannot see the shape of your own writing.
That is the specific reason a worked task beats a prompt list. You need to see what a contribution that genuinely engages with the other two replies looks like, next to your own, on the same prompt.
