“We should do that sometime” is warmth, not a plan
English separates being friendly from committing, and the friendly version has no date in it. Knowing which one you just received is a TOEFL 2026 Reading skill.
Two sentences that look identical
A great deal of everyday correspondence exists to maintain a relationship rather than to arrange anything. The trouble is that it borrows the vocabulary of arranging.
The test is not the warmth, the verb, or the politeness — all of that is identical. It is whether the sentence contains a time, a choice, or a request for one. A commitment always narrows something. Warmth never does.
And silence is an answer
The same logic runs in reverse. If you asked for three things and the reply addresses two, the third has been answered — with a no, or with a not-yet that the writer did not want to put in writing.
The rule
In institutional correspondence an omission is deliberate far more often than it is careless. People re-read their emails before sending them. If your question is missing from the reply, treat that as the reply.
This one is genuinely hard for readers whose first language handles refusal more directly. It is not that English speakers are being evasive — the convention is that declining in writing is harsher than declining in person, so the writing simply moves on.
What the options do with it
Items built on this pattern offer an option that treats the warm sentence as an appointment — put it in the calendar, reply to confirm, prepare for the meeting — and one that treats it as what it is. The first is not stupid; it is what a conscientious person does with a sentence containing the word “should”.
Ask one question of any friendly sentence: what has been narrowed? A date, a choice, a deadline, a name. If nothing has, nothing has been arranged.
