The extra tile is never a word that does not belong

Ten items, one spare tile each

Build a Sentence is ten of the twelve items in 2026 Writing — the bulk of the section by count, and the part with the least written about it. You are given a set of tiles and you assemble a sentence. There is always one tile left over.

The instinct is to scan for the word that does not fit the topic, discard it, and build with the rest. That instinct is wrong, and it is wrong in a way that costs marks quietly, because it works often enough to feel reliable.

The decoy is a form confusion, not a topic confusion

Look at that set again. Both candidate tiles are about opening a website. Neither is off-topic, neither is odd, and no amount of reading for meaning separates them. The only thing that does is subject–verb agreement.

So the question to ask is never “which word does not belong?” It is “which of these two forms does the rest of the sentence permit?” Agreement, tense, number, the form a preposition demands. The decoy is generated from a specific grammar point, and the point is the item.

Thirty-five seconds each

The email and the academic discussion take most of the 23-minute section, which leaves roughly six minutes for these ten items. About thirty-five seconds each.

That is not enough time to reason about agreement from first principles. It is enough time to recognise a form clash or not. Which means the preparation goal is not “learn the rules” — you very likely know them — but to make the recognition fast enough that no reasoning is required.

You cannot get faster by reading about it

Recognition speed comes from repetition against items built the same way, and from knowing which error type keeps catching you — which is invisible unless something records it. “I got eight of ten” tells you nothing. “Four of my six misses were agreement, none were tense” tells you exactly what to drill, and no worksheet will produce that line for you.
