The answer is what the passage supports, not what is true
Read an Academic Passage rewards knowing less. If you know the subject, the option that is correct about the world will be sitting there — and it is the trap.
Knowing the subject can cost you the mark
This is the one task where expertise is a liability. The passage makes a bounded claim; the option list includes a statement that is true of the world and unsupported by the text in front of you. A reader who knows the field recognises it, feels confirmed, and picks it.
The discipline is narrow and unnatural: for each option, ask which sentence of the passage you would point at. If you cannot point, it is not the answer, however confident you are.
A passage is five questions, not four
Each academic passage carries four multiple-choice items plus an Insert Text item — where a sentence is handed to you and you decide where in the paragraph it belongs. It is scored like everything else, and people routinely forget it exists when budgeting time.
Insert Text is a different skill
It tests cohesion rather than comprehension: what does “this” refer to, which sentence creates the gap the new one fills, where does a “however” become legal. You can understand a paragraph completely and still place the sentence wrongly, because the question is about the joins.
It runs to C2 — which is where it matters
ETS puts this task at B1–C2, one of only four that reach the top of the scale. If you are already comfortable, this is one of the few places left that can still separate you from the person beside you. If you are not, the marks are cheaper elsewhere and you should spend your time there first.

Because the wrong answer feels like knowledge. When you pick the true-but-unsupported option and get it wrong, the instinct is that the question was unfair rather than that you stopped reading the text and started reading your memory. That correction lands when something shows you the sentence you failed to point at.
